'Proun' is a term coined by Russian Suprematist artist El Lissitzky in the early part of the twentieth century. 'Proun' does not have an exact definition, though Lissitzky stated that it was "the station where one changes from painting to architecture"
The work embodies the Russian Constructivist goal of merging art with life by using abstract forms to suggest dynamic, functional spaces, thereby inviting the viewer to engage with the work interactively.
As an interpretation of this interactivity, I created a sculpture with a handle: inviting the viewer to transform the work. Springs, riveted joints, and cables allow the sculpture to transform between its open and closed position. Institial space in the painting is reinterpreted as a screen, indicating a tactility that relates to "occupation" of the space in and around the objects. The rusted iron gives color, texture, and smell to the object, lending a subtle sensory interaction to the piece.
